John R. Ficklen papers, 1832-1906.

The bulk of the material consists of notes, rough drafts, and correspondence relative to Ficklen's work on the history of the Reconstruction period in Louisiana. Included is a diary (typescript) kept by Albert Sidney Johnston while serving in the Black Hawk War (1832). A rough draft of a letter published in the New Orleans TIMES-DEMOCRAT requests research material pertaining to the Reconstruction period. Replies include letters suggesting possible sources and exhibiting attitudes about Reconstruction and freedmen. Present are letters from a former slave and a letter from L. P. Conner, former member of the Louisiana secession convention, remarking on the course adopted by the unionist members of the convention. In a letter (1894) to Ficklen, H. A. Vaught discusses the politics of Reconstruction, attitudes of Judge Charles E. Fenner and Generals Longstreet and Beauregard. He also refers to the attitude of white military organizations, participation in battle between whites and African-American troops in New Orleans, activities of F. N. Ogden, and the articles of incorporation of the Kingsley House Association, New Orleans, 1902. Manuscript volumes include a memorandum book in French (1840-1845), notebooks (1875-1878), and a scrapbook (1873-1890).
